My First Blog Post

Hey everyone,
My name is Marcos Mendez (he/him) and I am a first-year transfer nursing major from the bay area. I was born in March in the year 2001 making my zodiac sign the snake but the snake is also for those born in the years 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2013. Although I had always known that my zodiac sign was a snake I never cared to research what it truly meant. This is because I have never really liked snakes and thought they were strange and weird looking. Which caused me to be scared of them for some time and hindered me from wanting to learn more about the snake. Growing up being a “snake” was not seen as a good thing because it meant us being conniving and two-faced.
In researching my zodiac sign I have come to appreciate what the snake represents. Characteristics of the snake are actually wise, humorous, brilliant, and eloquent. If you are a snake you can be divided up even further by elements or “Wu Xing”: wood, earth, water, fire, and metal. Since I was born in the year 2001 that would make me a metal snake. Metal snakes are warm-hearted, generous, born leaders and possess motivation, courage, and perseverance. We often love to approach things in a very planned, targeted manner which could not be more true. Another part that I felt reflected me perfectly is that the quality of being a metal snake is that in moments of awkwardness, they can always be depended upon to crack a joke. This could not be any more true because there have been many instances when in awkward situations I try to break the ice by trying to joke around. Lastly, for snakes one of our lucky colors is red and ever since I was little red has always been my favorite color. I have always been drawn to how bright red is compared to the rest of the colors and its ability to always stand out.
In the Chinese zodiac, each sign has foods that are supposed to bring them good health and luck. For the snake, these foods are cranberries, tomatoes, red onion, almonds, mushrooms, and Chinese yam. These foods are able to help one's health, cranberries, and red onion are often called superfoods because they are high in nutrients and antioxidants, reducing the chance of certain cancers, improving immune function, and decreasing blood pressure. Almonds can help reduce a person’s blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. With the exception of the Chinese yams I do enjoy these foods/ingredients and I often eat red onions and mushrooms all time as they are part of a stew I love to make and I do enjoy cranberry juice with sparkling water. The snake’s horoscope for the 2023 years is quite good. We are supposed to acquire more knowledge and enjoy our life in college, which was very accurate because during this quarter I have had more opportunities to learn while also exploring Los Angeles and the surrounding area.
