Class 4 (Week 8) Rooster, Dog, Pig

I really enjoyed learning about pigs. A few interesting facts I learned about them were that pigs skin is very sensitive and so one of the reasons they roll around in mud is in order to prevent getting a sunburn. Piglets can learn their mother’s voice and their mother’s will often sing to them to try and get them to fall back to sleep. Another interesting fact is that pig blood could keep humans alive if it was transfused into one’s body. The last and most shocking fact I learned is that pigs can supposedly be taught how to play video games!

rabbit and dragon

In today's class, we discussed three zodiac animals--the rabbit, dragon, and snake. It's interesting that how ancient people created these folklores to personalize animals.  What is more interesting is that until today, these zodiac animals still representing the given characteristics and people would associate others, who were born in a particular year, with corresponding characteristics / personalities of that specific zodiac animal. For example, rabbits are associated with soft, tame, and feminine, which, unfortunately, most of them are undesirable in modern days.

Super Horse

Horse breeding has allowed for mankind to pick and choose the strongest, fastest, most endurable and not to mention the most beautiful horses of the bloodline. As we saw in class, animal cloning is not something new and has been achieved in monkeys, sheep, and more relevant to this post, horses. Cloning of the best horses has been done. In the horse-racing world this was at first seen as an unfair advantage, but it soon came to light that genetics alone are not enough to win a race or be the best.

The Beauty of Horses

EAT, Equine Assisted Therapy, is a treatment that uses equine activities to help people who struggle with autism, trauma, behavioral issues, ADD, depression, and other mental health issues. I have always loved horses. Growing up I felt a strong, unexplainable connection to them, similar to the way I feel about dogs. I didn’t know at the time that they were therapeutic animals, but I felt it. I use to work with special needs kids and I used to take one of them to EAT sessions in Will Rodgers State Park.

Considering the Implications of Eating Horse (Blog Entry #3)

I checked out this YouTube video from the channel "seeker" which appears to be a re-uploaded video of an on the streets style interview by discovery news. The main point of the video is the interviewer going around asking if people have ever eaten, or would ever be okay eating horse meat. It's an interesting question, and most people respond with a responding no. There's a few people who say yes, but they are the outlier.
